BMW finally entered the modern era of automobile construction in the post-war period when it launched the Grand Saloon (E3) and the Grand Coupé (E9). The design of the coupé was heralded as particularly successful. The BMW kidney-shaped grille, the signature “4-eyed countenance” with double circular headlamps, the typical character line along the side and the famed “Hofmeister Kink” are combined here for the first time to forge a unit which was to define the profile for the coming decades.
The first light weight versions, which were conceived as basic versions for motor sport, were available from 1971. They featured the engineering of the carburettor version BMW 3.0 CS and generated 180 hp. In 1972, the BMW 3.0 CSL was fitted with the 200 hp injection engine, and the last version delivering 206 hp was presented in 1973.
